The Gates Reading Session

The Mayor of Westhoughton, Cllr Gillian Wroe, was invited to The Gates Primary School on Friday 30th January to read stories to three classes. She writes:

‘What a wonderful way to end the week by reading stories to the Nursery, Reception and Year 1 classes. As a retired early years teacher it brought back lovely memories of sharing a love of books and seeing the children absorbed in stories as well as responding to words and phrases as the stories developed.

All three stories were among my personal favourites with the theme of friendship and kindness. ‘Elmer’ by David McKee for the Nursery, ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson for Reception and ‘Room on the Broom’ also by Julia Donaldson for Year 1.

The children were beautifully behaved and displayed good listening skills.

Thank you to Headteacher Mr Doherty, the class teachers and most of all to the children for your warm welcome and showing me what an amazing school you have created. I’m looking forward to reading to other classes next week for National Storytelling Week.’
