Burns Night in Chorley
Sunday 25th January is Burns Night, when Scottish people all over the world celebrate Robert Burns, Scotland’s most famous and beloved poet. On Friday night the Mayor of Westhoughton, Cllr Gillian Wroe, attended the Mayor of Chorley’s Charity Burns Night and Ceilidh:
‘It was a pleasure to attend the Burns Night with my husband Phil and share a table with the Mayors of Blackrod, Horwich and Longridge and their consorts in a beautifully decorated room with 150 people.
We were treated to the spectacle of the traditional ‘Piping in the Haggis’ followed by a fierce rendition of ‘Address to the Haggis’ delivered by and in what Lancashire County Cllr Alf Clempson claimed was the true traditional manner!
The food was delicious, all Scottish based including of course haggis and neeps and tatties.
An auction of amazing prizes, including a 1966 cricket bat signed by the then England and West Indies teams and a bottle of whiskey signed by John Prescott, raised just under £2,000. This was followed by Scottish folk songs and dancing and a special prize draw.
We would like to thank the Mayor and Mayoress of Chorley, Cllr Alistair and Mrs Jane Norwood, for what was a wonderfully enjoyable and memorable evening.’
