Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor
2025-2026
Town Mayor Councillor Gillian Wroe and Mayoreess Councillor Deirdre McGeown
It is a privilege and an honour to be elected as Mayor of Westhoughton. I have lived in Westhoughton, with my husband Phil, for 22 years so I am not a true ‘Howfener’ but hope to be adopted one day!
I was born and brought up in Kearsley by my parents John and Margaret Rothwell, who both became Councillors (and Chairs) of Kearsley Council and later Bolton Council. It was almost inevitable that I would become interested in politics and serving my community at some time in my life.
My career as a teacher, working for Bolton Council, was in Early Years Education. The schools where I taught were mainly in Farnworth and ranged from nursery school aged children (3-4) to Year 1 (5-6). In my retirement I have continued my membership of the National Education Union and serve on the Bolton Committee as the Rep for Retired Members. I organise visits with an educational content as I believe you are never too old to learn something new.
I’m passionate about the environment, I litter pick every week (not just at election time!), and wildlife which links my interest in gardening with my obsession with hedgehogs and birds which visit our garden.
As a Councillor on Westhoughton Town Council, and particularly during the last year as Deputy Mayor, I have enjoyed meeting people in Westhoughton. There are so many fantastic groups supporting people through sport, shared interests, charitable work etc that there is a definite feeling of community, which I really appreciate.
In my year as Mayor I am looking forward to representing Westhoughton at Civic events and visiting as many groups/organisations as I can alongside this year’s Mayoress, my colleague Councillor Deirdre McGeown. We will endeavour to represent our town with integrity and dignity as befits the role.
Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Sarita Chohan and Consort Rish Chohan
I have been a valued resident of Westhoughton over 25 years. I pride myself for my unwavering dedication to my family, profession and community. I strive to exemplify the spirit of public service and community engagement.
I am a proud mum of two boys who attend the local high school and a devoted wife to my husband Rish Chohan, who operates a well known local café on Market Street. My family is an integral part of the Westhoughton community, contributing to its warmth and vibrancy.
I have been a registered nurse for the past 30 years, a profession I am deeply passionate about. My commitment to healthcare is evident in the care and the compassion I show my patients ever day. Additionally, I served in the 207 Field Hospital with the Queen Alexandra Royal Nursing Corps for four years, and experience I greatly appreciated and which further honed my skills.
As an active member of the Westhoughton Royal British Legion, I am deeply involved in local initiatives and events. I value the friendly and supportive environment of Westhoughton and have always felt at home in this close-knit community. Originally from Mauritius, I have seamlessly integrated into Westhoughton, contributing significantly to its social fabric.
As I assume my role as Deputy Mayor, I look forward to supporting the Mayor and serving the people of Westhoughton. My dedication to delivering the highest standard of service to the community is a testament to my commitment and affection for the town. I am enthusiastic about the opportunities this role presents and am determined to make a positive impact during my tenure.
My journey from Mauritius to becoming Westhoughton’s Deputy Mayor is a narrative of dedication, service and community spirit. My professional achievements and personal dedication to Westhoughton make me a respected leader who will work tirelessly to enhance the well-being and unity of the community.
