Mayors Charity Cheque Presentation 2

The Mayor of Westhoughton, Cllr Gillian Wroe, has been to present cheques to her two chosen charities for her Mayor’s Charities. Here she highlights the second of them:

‘Each year the Mayor chooses charities close to their hearts. It’s a very personal decision, not one taken by the council.

The second of my charities is ‘The Hoggery’. This is a hedgehog rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jayne Schofield in her Westhoughton back garden, assisted by a small number of volunteers.

I first became interested, well actually obsessed, with hedgehogs when I realised that we had at least one visiting our garden. Every night now we put out food and water and put a wildlife camera out to film their comings and goings.

Then I heard about ‘The Hoggery’ and the dedication that Jayne has towards helping these adorable creatures and getting them well enough to be released back into the wild where they belong.

It as been a pleasure to raise money to support this small but vital lifeline to one of our most beloved native animals. I would like to thank everyone who supported my events to make this possible.

Today I presented a cheque for £2,399 to Jayne and ‘Mr Bully’, so named because he would boss the other hedgehogs when he was with a foster carer!

The money will help towards buying much needed equipment such as an incubator (approximately £800), vital medicines £100, a microscope or a portable air con unit.’
