Mayors Charity Cheque Presentation 1
The Mayor of Westhoughton, Cllr Gillian Wroe, has been to present cheques to her two chosen charities for her Mayor’s Charities. Here she highlights the first of them:
‘Each year the Mayor chooses charities close to their hearts. It’s a very personal decision, not one taken by the council.
The first of my charities is Westhoughton Assist Service. This was started as a food bank in 2020 during Covid, in a room at the Hub, then to cabins on the car park and finally to John Holt Community Centre.
Over the years I’ve seen how hard the volunteers have worked and I’ve been impressed by how much they do for the community. It has been a pleasure to raise money to help them to continue to provide help and support to individuals and families who find themselves in need.
I would like to thank everyone who supported my events.
Today I presented a cheque for £2,399 to Lesley Monks and Alison Colley who accepted it on behalf of the whole team.
The money will help towards their work in the centre not only for vital food purchases for the food bank but also community work including lunch boxes for children during the school holidays. Some may also go to minor essential work on the building.’
