Afternoon Tea For Veterans
on Friday 15th August, on VJ Day, the Mayor of Westhoughton Cllr Gillian Wroe attended an afternoon tea. She writes:
‘I was delighted to be invited to an afternoon tea for veterans to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day, held at Westhoughton Lions Club.
It was organised by the Westhoughton Branch of the Royal British Legion who, like me, had a busy day attending two other events.
After the horrors of war the people were able to finally smile and begin to enjoy life again so it was fitting to have a celebration between the more formal remembrance services.
It was a pleasure to once again meet up with the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton and Deputy Mayor of Westhoughton Cllr Sarita Chohan, on this occasion wearing her Royal British Legion ‘hat’ as a member, veteran and sandwich maker!
The afternoon was made all the more enjoyable by being entertained by Shelley singing popular songs of the era and later.
Thank you to Marcus and Lindsay Pollard for having the vision and to all the team at the RBL for the hard work in making the event such a success.’
