Mini Police
Last year 10 pupils from The Gates Primary School attended an attestation ceremony where they were enrolled as ‘Mini Police’. The Mayor of Westhoughton was disappointed to have missed the occasion, due to another commitment, but was keen to see how they were progressing:
‘Yesterday I joined the Mini Police, and Deputy Head Mr Simpson, in their road safety activity. The group listened to police officers Cath and Michelle explaining about the importance of speed limits on our roads. The pupils were keen to answer questions and showed a great deal of maturity in their answers and comments.
We were joined by Amanda and Anthony from GMP Traffic Section who showed us how the speed guns are used and all the Mini Police had the opportunity to look through the speed gun from inside the van.
Then I went with one of the groups to stand by the road to watch how a speed gun is used in a real life situation. We were encouraged to put thumbs up if a car was within the speed limit and thumbs down if it wasn’t. We only saw one go over, so well done to all the others!
Please note that only the officers held the speed gun and it wasn’t recording any information, the exercise was simply educational.
This is the best way to learn - by having hands on experiences.
I really enjoyed my time with the Mini Police so thank you for inviting me’
