Armistice Day Service

On Tuesday 11th November, on Armistice Day the Mayor and Mayoress of Westhoughton, Cllrs Gillian Wroe and Deirdre McGeown attended a short service at the War Memorial. The Mayor writes:

‘It was an honour for us to attend this service at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month as so many have done before us. It is such a poignant occasion.

The service, led by Pastor Glen Atkinson, was attended by around 150 people including pupils from Washacre Primary School and Westhoughton Kids Club. It was lovely to see all ages come together in this act of remembrance.

The two minutes silence was marked by the Last Post, the Reveille, maroons and the reading of the Exhortation and Kohima Epitaph.

The community of Westhoughton has been outstanding in the support given to the Poppy Appeal, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day and I am honoured and humbled to be your Mayor.

Thanks go to Marcus and Lindsay Pollard for their hard work over the last few weeks, the poppy sellers, the members of the RBL in Westhoughton especially Martin and Jimmy the Standard Bearers, the Rev Carol Pharoah and St Bartholomew’s Church, Pastor Glen Atkinson, local primary schools, Sarah our Town Clerk and the local businesses who gave so much in time and effort.

We WILL remember them. ’
