New Mayor for 2026/2027

Councillor Sarita Chohan writes:-

“Tuesday 5th May at the Annual WTC meeting, it was the official Mayoral changeover.

I was humbled by this experience and there were emotional moments too.

I would like to give a sincere thank you to everyone for such a smooth and memorable mayoral handover this evening at the Westhoughton Town Council meeting.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my predecessor, Councillor Gillian Wroe, who has done an amazing job in the role and worked tirelessly to fulfil her duties. Having had the privilege of serving as Deputy Mayor alongside her, I have learnt so much—truly big shoes to fill (no pun intended!).

A special thank you to my husband, Rishi Chohan, who will be supporting me throughout this journey as my Consort—your encouragement means everything.

Congratulations as well to our new Deputy Mayor, Councillor Linda Maher, and her Consort, Councillor Neil Maher. I look forward to working closely together.

I am also proud to share that during my mayoral year, I will be supporting two wonderful charities close to my heart: The Darren Deady Foundation and Westhoughton Assist Service. I look forward to raising awareness and funds for these incredible causes.

I would also like to extend my thanks for the support shown by my peers at the Westhoughton Royal British Legion—it is truly appreciated.

Finally, I am incredibly grateful for the support shown tonight by my fellow councillors. Together, we will continue to serve our community with dedication and purpose

I hope to start this journey of my Mayoral Year with Community, Care and Commitment into every decision at every opportunity to serve.”
