VE Day Event
Written by Cllr Gillian Wroe, Mayor of Westhoughton “On Saturday 3rd May 2025 Westhoughton Town Council and the Westhoughton Branch of the Royal British Legion, supported by RAFA Leigh branch, held an 80th Anniversary Celebration of VE Day at Westhoughton Cricket Club. The free event was a culmination of 12 months hard work and cooperation between the groups involved to produce what everyone agreed was a wonderful day.
Throughout the day over 1,000 members of the public, veterans, volunteers and VIP guests enjoyed an afternoon of parades, speeches, displays, activities, live music performances and picnics. With many people joining in the fun dressed in 1940’s themed outfits it was fitting to have Mr and Mrs Winston Churchill making an appearance at the event.
Reflecting on the success of the day Mayor of Westhoughton Cllr Neil Maher said “ Today wasn’t just about commemorating the end of the war in Europe; it’s also time to reflect on the strength of our community, both past and present. What made today really special and memorable was the way that the community of Westhoughton came together to make this event happen.“
